Kajiado Central is a semi-arid region of Kenya that is home to Maasai pastoral communities and a diverse variety of wildlife. Over the years, recurring droughts and diminishing water resources have intensified competition for water, escalating human-wildlife conflict and resource depletion.
This project aims to construct community water pans in locations across the region to provide shared water sources for wildlife and livestock, alleviating the worst effects of drought. Through consultations with local communities knowledgeable about the terrain and wildlife movements, this project will focus on selecting a strategic site to construct the first of our water pans. It will have a capacity of 5,000–10,000 cubic meters and will be installed with wildlife-friendly infrastructure.
This project is designed to mitigate the escalating human-wildlife conflict in Kajiado Central by fostering sustainable coexistence. The initiative will therefore leverage Eco Clubs’ expertise in youth-led conservation to involve local communities and schools in creating and maintaining these shared water resources. By addressing water scarcity, the project will enhance the resilience of ecosystems and livelihoods.
Water Pans like these are a lifesaver for wild animals and livestock affected by drought.
In consultation with local communities, this project will select strategic sites to construct water pans.
Wild animals such as Zebra herds will use community water pans when water is scarce.
